Happy Nick-a-versary

Two years ago TODAY…my oldest son, Nick, woke up in the morning at 6am having seizures. They didn’t start out as massive seizures, but over the course of 30 minutes he went from bad to absolute worst. We called 911, the paramedics came, he was airlifted to Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital (in Hollywood, FL), were he spent 51 days in the PICU (Pediatric Intensive Care Unit).

Two years ago TODAY was the absolute WORST day of my life…you see, Nick, who was 11 at the time, had been a healthy, happy, typical 11 year old…but on August 17, 2005 our lives changed forever…while we were in the thick of it, not knowing what each day held for us, we held on to each other and we held on to God. We have an out of this world support system with our friends, family, and congregation at
Flamingo Road Church, and between that and our faith in God we were able to survive one of the worst things a parent can go through.

Today, two years later….we are a stronger family, we have two sons who are alive, happy, and well. We serve, love, and live for an amazing God, and we don’t take anything for granted. Nick’s time in the PICU has given us a new outlook on things…it has helped us to carve out more family time, to be more strategic with the boys when we are together, and it has strengthened our faith exponetially. I would never wish this on any mother, any child, or any family, but I do know that God took us through the fire and we came out on the other side, and that is only because of His grace and His mercy. Thank you God!

Happy Nick-a-versary Nick…I can’t imagine a day without you. ~ Love, Mom

  2. Mel, What a wonderful GOD we serve, a GOD of second chances. Perhaps, this challenge that Nick went through is part of his growing process, not physical but spiritual. I am so happy for you that you are still able to hold him 2 years later. He was healed and saved.
Thinking of you all Mashburns! Have an amazing night.

  4. Jen, Ivy, & Marcy,

Thanks so much for your kind words, and constant prayers…we know that the only reason Nick was able to walk out of this nightmare was because God has something REALLY BIG planned for his life. Thank you for being on the journey with us…
