Disturb Us Lord

A very sweet woman had this up on her blog a couple of weeks ago. Her name is Joylene and her blog is called t_h_e_r_a_p_y…check it out sometime, she has some great information and insights.

Any way, when I saw this it just blew my mind and I have been wanting to post about it every since I saw it. For so many of us, myself included, we can become complacent and comfortable with our lives and our walk with Christ.

I want to BE more like Him,
I want to love more like Him,
and I want everyone who meets me to see Him in me.

1 John 4:4
You, dear children,
are from God and have overcome them,
because the one who is in you
is greater than the one who is in the world.

So, in honor of this week that has been a complete distraction (for me at least) in what I should be doing, I would like to dedicate this poem to all of us…

Disturb us Lord
Disturb us, Lord, when
We are too well pleased with ourselves,
When our dreams have come true
Because we have dreamed too little,
When we arrived safely
Because we sailed too close to the shore.

Disturb us, Lord, when
With the abundance of things we possess
We have lost our thirst
For the waters of life;
Having fallen in love with life,
We have ceased to dream of eternity
And in our efforts to build a new earth,
We have allowed our vision
Of the new Heaven to dim.

Disturb us, Lord, to dare more boldly,
To venture on wider seas
Where storms will show your mastery;
Where losing sight of land,
We shall find the stars.
We ask You to push back
The horizons of our hopes;
And to push into the future
In strength, courage, hope, and love.
~by Sir. Francis Drake

May each and every one of us feel the push that God is trying to give us today!

Blessings,

  1. Great poem, but I must admit it’s hard to pray. However – I know that those “disturbances” are so worthwhile in the end.

  2. Like Mari said, this is a hard one to pray. I pray “lead me not into temptation and deliver me from evil.”

    I guess when one is as old as I am, one has had more than enough disturbances. Through all of the disturbances, I have learned to quit hanging on to things with white knuckles and to trust in God more and more.

    I would like to grow without the growing pains!

  3. AWESOME!!! i checked out her blog, very cool. I copied the poem, It’s a new message for my lady bikers:) Have a great night!!

  4. I needed that today. I have been annoyed all day by His disturbance and it has put me in a fowl mood. What I didn’t do was look at it through the lens of eternity, just through the lens of all about me. So thank you. I must go fess up. 🙂

  5. Hi Melissa! I found you via Sue (Praise & Coffee)!! And I am so glad I did! Thanks for this very inspiring post! I am so guilty of this complacency as well! I just read on another blog post about the thought process of “God is good…when things are good” but what about when things are not good…..well, she went on to say that GOD is still good! and that the two thoughts are independent of one another! VERY wise words!!!!
    Reading that caused me to remember a statement a dear friend made to me regarding her young son’s illness(he was awaiting a liver transplant and subsequently died while on the waiting list…he was only 2 years old…) Anyway, she said to me…’The mountain tops are wonderful but my valleys’ are most peaceful”….. meaning in short…that when it is only you and GOD…when all else is totally gone and you have handed it ALL over to HIM there is perfect peace. That peace he promises that will surpass all of your human understanding…. She rested in that peace while her baby was dying. She counted on that peace while dealing with the aftermath of his passing on to eternal life with her Father! She is such an inspiration….and so are you, Melissa! You have a beautiful heart for GOD….and you share it so openly and preciously! Thank you!
    I will be back to visit…and I’d love to add your link to my side bar if that would be OK????
    May your day be flooded with blessings my new friend!
