TV Free Monday’s

Starting TODAY we will be turning off our TV for ONE whole day each week, and for our family we chose Monday’s. There’s no real major reason for this other than we just felt like we needed to “unplug” from it a little and focus more on reading, listening, journaling, and hanging out as a family.
We’re also taking it one step further and have decided to start memorizing Scripture verses again. We used to do this when our boys were in a Christian school (for their elementary years) but haven’t taken on the challenge as they have gotten older (when it is really even more important).

We’ll see how it goes…we’ve all already (at 8:03am) faced the challenge of wanting to turn it on just to have it on (didn’t realize how often we really do that). Who knows, this could end up being our favorite day of the week…ok, I know, let’s not get crazy, but I am looking forward to unplugging a bit today!

Happy Monday!

  1. Hey Melissa,

I was joking a bit with you this morning on Twitter, but this is a great idea.

My ministry is primarily focused on those struggling with pornography and sexual addiction. I got here because it was an addiction for me for 24 years.

A few years back, the American Academy of Pediatrics released a study saying that in the next 12 months, American children will be exposed to over 14,000 sexually explicit references. That’s 40 times a day.

The USA today wrote a few years back that sexual content on network television has more than tripled over the last decade.

There’s a sexual reference on network television once every 4 minutes, and 75% of that outside of God’s design for sex.

Anything that we can do to reduce the steady flow of sexual misinformation our children get is a great idea.

    Kudos to You!

    Grace and Peace,

    tal

  2. Hi Mel – this is a fantastic idea. You’ve inspired me! I love the addition of the Bible verse memorization. If it helps your family to know, my parents called a family meeting when I was 11 to ask us to vote on giving our television away to our grandmother after she was widowed. We unanimously agreed to give her our TV, and didn’t have one for 5 years. I may have missed out on C.H.I.P.S. and Disney movies, but on the other hand, me and my brother and sisters read TONS of books, played all the board games we could get our hands on, made up our own games, built things out of cardboard, created comic strips–in short, we learned how to use our imaginations. I appreciate my parents’ foresight because later I learned they were also very concerned about our TV consumption at the time. (Pretty sneaky to appeal to our blossoming senses of compassion!) Anyway, GOOD FOR YOU and your family. You’re an inspiration.

  3. What a great idea! It’s amazing how many subliminal messages we get from our TV viewing. Silence can be golden! And think of all the time you’ll have to do Romans 12:2. You can have your minds renewed as you memorize Scripture. Hmm …maybe I need to consider?

  4. Keep it up, you’re an inspiration! I’m thinking of talking to Steve about instituting a TV free day.

  5. You go Mashburn family and enjoy your extra time together.

we have homeschooled for several years, we decided very early on that the TV was not going to sap our time. Honestly, we don’t miss it.

  6. wow you are brave during the day isnt much of a problem usually just watch one talk show but at night i usually watch a couple hours of tv every night
