TV Free Monday’s Part 2
Happy Monday Everyone!
Welcome back to Mel’s World this week! I have so much to share with you that I don’t hardly even know where to start. So, let’s start in the beginning why don’t we?
Last Monday our family embarked on a brand new adventure. We started TV FREE MONDAY’S at our house and at first I truly thought we would be fighting an uphill battle with our boys. At 13 & 15 they are quite used to having the TV on just about all the time they are in the house (thankfully they like to be outside a lot).
We sat them down and talked to them about our desire to “unplug” on Monday’s and were shocked when they jumped on board and agreed that it was a great idea. (Seriously y’all, I was shocked!) My hubby also thought it would be helpful for us to focus on a Bible verse for the week so on all the TV’s in the house he taped up our verse to 1) help us remember NOT to turn on the tv, and 2) to help us commit the verse to our memories.
So…here’s what happened, because I am guessing at this point you just really want to know if it worked! Right?
We ALL made it an entire day without turning the TV on at all, not for music, not for news, not for anything. I have to say that it was actually harder for ME than it was for anyone. I like to “unwind” at the end of the night with a good TV show to help turn off my brain. Unfortunately I was probably the most tempted out of any of us to turn it on that day.
I’m just shooting straight with ya here!
Thankfully there was a ton of grace and a serious thought shift that happened to all of us that day! We all memorized our verse (Ecc. 5:5) and still know it this week (yay!), we played family games towards the end of the night (Scattergories), and read tons of books during the day (go God!).
I have to say that it wasn’t as easy as I thought it would be, but I am so thankful that we have started it. Today was actually easier for everyone and we have been able to really focus more on each other. (Which is always a nice thing for families!)
This week our verse is Proverbs 3:6 (NLT), you are more than welcome to join in with us in our Memory Verse for the week and who knows…maybe you’ll turn off your TV’s on Monday too!
Seek his will
in all you do,
and he will show you
which path to take.
Here’s to a GREAT start to a new week!
Wow! This is such an awesome idea and so encouraging to hear! I’m not sure if I could do it? I only watch television in the evenings – but like you said – it’s nice to unwind with it. Also, it’s handy to keep the kids busy before dinner and things. Thanks for pricking my heart – I’m not sure if my family is ready for this – but you have my wheels turning! Thanks.
I wish my family would be up for this but dh like you likes to unwind at night and not have to think. LOL! Maybe I will start to drop subtle hints about it and see what reaction I get. Wink!
Smiles!
This is such a great idea Mel. I just recently had to take Sunday’s back. I started noticing my teen doing things after church with his sweet girlfriend and we were all going in different directions so I did take Sunday back and no plans are allowed to be made. Church and family only. I know we are probably up for a little challenge and like you it would probably be harder on me than the rest of my family.
Blessings,
Linda
