Speak to My Soul Devotions ~ Riding the Roller Coaster

Before we get carried away I have to tell you something…I didn’t actually ride a roller coaster this weekend.

I used to absolutely LOVE them. I rode roller coasters at Disney, Universal, Bush Gardens, Kings Island, Dollywood (or is it Dollyworld), Sea World, and the I am sure many others this old brain just can’t remember anymore.

Unfortunately I just don’t like them anymore. I get really bad motion sickness on them and it pretty much ruins the rest of the day for me, so now I am the official “baggage” holder for the family while the boys ride the roller coasters. Which is actually quite fine by me, it gives me a little bit of piece and quiet while they scream, laugh, and get silly.

The roller coaster that I am riding right now is actually the roller coaster called life. You know, the bends, the turns, the giant incline, the sudden drops that leave your stomach in your throat, the loops, the backwards parts, and everything in between.

Do you know what I am talking about?

This year has been one gigantic roller coaster ride for my family. My mom was diagnosed with Breast Cancer, her surgery, chemo, and radiation, my husband and I went back into ministry at a local church, the unexpected development of a seizure disorder for my oldest son, root canals, my son’s other health issues with his back and diabetes, and so much more…piling up all on top of each other.

To be quite honest I have often tried to find the safest place to step off this adventure…maybe a quiet little beach house or log cabin in the mountains would be a great place to step off and out for a bit?

But no…I hang on, cling to, and tether myself to the only One who can calm the storms and even out the roller coaster tracks for a little while.

My soul clings to you; your right hand upholds me. ~ Psalm 63:8 NIV

I am sure that there are others just like me that have gone through the roller coaster this past year and maybe even some of you who are still on it right now. If you are on the roller coaster right now there is only one thing I have to say;

Cling Tight Dear One,
Cling Tight!

Even in the midst of wild adventure on this roller coaster ride you and I can rest in the peace and comfort of knowing that we are not alone.

Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me. ~ John 16:32

Father God, right now the ride of life is bumpy and chaotic, but I know there is peace that comes from you. Father I pray for that peace that transcends all understanding and I pray for comfort in the midst of this roller coaster ride. Father you are great, mighty, and absolutely amazing…thank you for never leaving us nor forsaking us. Give us what we need to endure this roller coaster season. We love you Lord…in Jesus precious and powerful name, Amen.

It’s Your Turn…
If you are riding the roller coaster right now please take a minute to pray that prayer, then leave me a comment letting me know how I can pray for you specifically.

If you have gotten off the roller coaster and can offer some encouragement to those who are still on it, then please leave a comment with a word, verse, or note of encouragement…thanks!

  1. I’m so sorry to hear about your mom! It sounds like this year definitely has been a roller coaster. I love your perspective and your beautiful faith, Melissa. 🙂

    Hugs,

  2. Mel, I believe many have been on this roller coaster this year…I love that He inspects it to ensure our safety, and straps us in to secure us, sits with us as we scream, and squint our eyes, and waits with outstretched arms as we arrive at the destination!

So troubled to learn of your trials this year. Praying comfort and refreshing to you!
