Life Lessons from the Wizard of Oz

Today I was in one of my “thinking spots” and I felt the stirring to start a new “series” of blogs. I have tip-toed around topics and had them be consecutive, but have never written specifically on a series. So…it seems like a great time to be obedient and start something new…stretch myself, and maybe you will get something out of it as well.

The new series of blogs will be called the “Life Lessons from the Wizard of Oz”

For those of you who have not seen the Wizard of Oz (are there any of you out there?) I found this plot summary for the movie online…
In this charming film based on the popular L.Frank Baum stories, Dorothy and her dog Toto are caught in a tornado’s path and somehow end up in the land of Oz. Here she meets some memorable friends and foes in her journey to meet the Wizard of Oz who everyone says can help her return home and possibly grant her new friends their goals of a brain, heart and courage. Written by Dale Roloff

What is it about this story that no matter how many times you have seen it,
no matter how old you are,
no matter if it has been decades since you have seen it,
you instantly go back in time (in your memories) to the first time you saw it.
It’s a classic, it’s timeless, and it is loaded with some amazing life lessons.

The Cowardly Lion – about having Courage (in storms)
The Tin Man – about our Heart (Love)
The Scarecrow – about our Brain (head/thinking)
Dorothy – about having Faith
The Wizard – about being who you really are (in Christ)

  1. the wizard of oz takes me back to grade 5. i tried out as our school was planning to do this play in the spring. after try outs were completed they assigned the roles based on the outcome.

    I WAS GIVEN THE ROLE OF A TREE!! a tree! to tell you the truth, i was kinda flattered as i also got to do a special “tree dance”.

  3. I was trying to decide my favorite part of the movie… and then I decided that my favorite part is ALL the songs… I guess I just wish my life could be a musical! all singing all the time!

  4. I would have to say that my favorite part of the movie was when ‘What goes around comes around’ catches up to the witch and her flying monkeys.

    Great blog idea by the way. I will be checking back to see how it is coming along.

  5. It was hard to decide which part of the movie was my favorite. I will have to say the happines Dorothy had when she realized she was back home with her loved ones. Ist’n that what living a Christian life is all about?. Doing what we are called to do and one day open eyes and realized that we are HOME with our Father. We just have to make sure we do it right and now.

    I love the songs too, but generally my family doesn’t like it a lot when I burst out in song! Ha!

    Ha…I forgot about the flying monkey’s…they were kind of creepy to me when I was young. Now they are just funny!

  7. This is a great idea and I will be looking forward to reading your posts. My favorite part of The Wizard of Oz is anytime the little munchkins were dancing and singing. I also liked the exact moment the movie changed from black & white to color. On the flip side, I was very scared of the wicked witch and the flying monkeys.

    I loved that moment too (from black and white to all the beautiful colors)…the monkey’s were a tad freaky (especially to a kid)…

  9. I loved finding the reference to The Wizard of Oz. I had a strange dream the other night and woke up thinking about the Cowardly Lion who in my dream had found his courage. I need to review the story! I’ve forgotten how it happened in the story. Great analogy!

    Whoa…how cool is that? I love when God does that…you have a dream, then all the sudden you “run across” something that is specifically about your dream. It trips me out every time…He is just so stinkin’ amazing!!!
