The Heart of a Tin Man

Life Lessons from the Wizard of Oz
Tin Man
Part 2
Proverbs 27:19
As a face is reflected in water, so the heart reflects the person

While I am sitting here preparing this lesson from the heart I keep hearing the Beatles song, “All you need is love”, in the back of my head. Is it really that simple?

We cannot love God unless we love each other. – Dorothy Day

When I think about the Wizard of Oz movie and I think about the Tin Man it is funny to think that this character was searching for a heart. I mean, seriously, he was by far the most sensitive and caring of the group that was traveling on the yellow brick road of life together, and yet because he didn’t physically have a heart in him he thought that he didn’t have the capability to love.

The strange thing is though, that the wizard didn’t really have a real heart to give him either…instead he gave him a fake heart made of velvet that was filled with yucky sawdust. (Poor Tin Man…he must have felt let down…until he was shown the truth)

You see…the tin man didn’t have to have a physical heart in his body because he had a pure heart and spirit …check out Matthew 5:8 where it says…”God blesses those whose hearts are pure, for they will see God”.

I have just finished re-reading the book Today Matters, by John Maxwell, and there is a section where it says, “To develop and discover our talent, we need courage (just like the cowardly lion). The English word courage comes from the French word coeur, which means “heart”. And we need to recognize that if we display courage, our hearts will be tested continually.”

That makes SO much sense…doesn’t it??? You need the Courage from the Cowardly Lion, and the Heart of the Tin Man together to make it through the trials and tests that are constantly coming your way. (And if you are like me, they are ALWAYS coming…)

So, I guess it is true…maybe all we need is love… Luke 10:27 He answered: ” ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’ ; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ “

I did a post a few weeks ago on this same song & theme! It is called Love is All You Need!

    Cool!

  2. Thank you for your lovely comments and prayers. I am praying for a family breakthrough. There is some distance between a couple of family members and we are praying for the breech to be closed. Thank you – I so appreciate it.

  3. So good Mel!
I think it really is that simple- all we need is love…but that’s really so complex at the same time.

    Thanks for making us think!
