Life Verse/Song

Do you have a Life Verse/Song?

I do.

When I first started my walk with Christ at 22 years old I wanted something that would connect me, bind me, and help me be tethered to my Heavenly Father.

A friend suggested that I pick out a verse in the Bible that I could relate to, was passionate about, or that had a special meaning to me.

I picked James 1:19, Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry.

As a brand new baby Christian the thing that I struggled with most was my mouth (can anyone relate?). I had lots of opinions and I felt it was my obligation to share those with anyone who might listen. (I have gotten a whole lot better with this, but dh would say that I am not “fixed” yet on this.)

Then when I went into full-time ministry I needed another verse for the new adventure in my life. I felt that I had learned to speak the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15) and was ready to take on a new truth to adopt as my own.

1 John 3:18 – “Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth.” …quickly became my heart…you see, I am a get it done kind of girl and I don’t take lightly to people just talking unless they are going to back it up with some ACTION!

But over the last couple of months the Lord has laid it on my heart to pick a new life verse. I wrestled with it a bit because I am still so passionate about James 1:19 and 1 John 3:18 but I feel the Lord leading me to Acts 20:24But my life is worth nothing unless I use it for doing the work assigned me by the Lord Jesus – the work of telling others the Good News about God’s wonderful kindness and love.

So, here I am…on the journey, ready to be used by Him for Him. I can’t wait to see what He has up His sleeves, but I know that it is WAY better than anything I could have ever dreamed of.

I’d love to hear about your Life Verse/Song and why it is so special to you.

It always blows me away how the Word of God can touch your soul. Looking forward to hearing about the verses that have a special place in your heart.

Singing my life song with you,

  1. Ooh such good food for thought! I’ll ponder on that one!

  2. I am having an “I hear you God” moment. You know when the same scripture keeps pooping up. The James 1:19 verse was in my devotions today. So I guess I better figure out what I need to work on.

  3. Thank you foe visiting my blog. that is a really good question . I am going to pray about it and get back with you!

  4. You know, I just recently heard of people doing this and I love it. I grew up in a sheltered community surrounded by Christians and am surprised that it hasn’t been suggested. I have had several verses that I aplied to my kife, but never really considered them my verse. I am going to do a little studying on this and see what I come up with. Thanks for this little “push”!

  5. I have a chapter that comes up again and again in my life … it is Isaiah 54 and at different times, God has quickened different bits to me. It seems I am always stretching!

  6. Melissa – that’s great…let me know what you come up with.

Jennifer – Don’t you just love it when God does that. James 1:19 has been a favorite of mine since the beginning.

Holy Chaos – please do…I would love to hear what God reveals to you.

Mari – you are welcome for the “push”. I am certain that you will hear something pop out at you today.

Mamageek – thanks…I like it too!

SassieKiwi – I know what you mean by the strectching thing…but you know what is cool about that? It just means HE is preparing you for another opportunity to shine for Him!

Ladies, great thoughts! I know this one is a stretch for some…but I also know that it can give focus to our love for the Scriptures.

    Keep praying, Melissa

  7. Good Morning Mel,

Throughout my walk with the Lord I have had several different verses I have claimed as my “life” verse. However there is one that stands in the front of my mind every time.

Romans 8:28And we know that all things work together for good to them that LOVE God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

  8. Mine is Philippians 1:6 “Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.”

Keeps me constantly aware it is ALL ABOUT HIM and not about me.

  9. Mel, I truly love and constantly recite Proverbs 3:5-6

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge HIM, and he will set your path straight.”

I remind myself that if I do Trust HIM, (surrender it all) He will make my path straight. And lean NOT in my own understanding- Which is trying to figure out with my human mind, what the Lord already has planned for me, His WILL.

    Thinking of you.

  10. This really is a great thought. I did choose a verse for Shaelyn when we adopted her but never did for myself or my older girls.
I’ll be giving this some thought.

  11. Great thoughts, and I will be back to answer…I am a person of many favorites! I do have to say that the 1st 3 you have named have been critical in my faith walk!

I gotta run, I “snuck” on – but, you have given me something good to think on!

  12. This is a really hard question! Can’t decide between these two:

‘The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning.’ (Lam. 3:22-23)

‘A gentle word turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.’ (Prov. 15:1)

  13. I loved your blog today. It really got me thinking. I’ve clung to the same verse most of my life, “Many are the plans in a man’s heart but the Lord’s purpose prevails” Prov. 19:21. I guess in a way, I still haven’t mastered the art of handing over control in various situation in my life but maybe I should pray about a possible new verse. Good food for thought!!!

  14. My life verse is Jer. 29:11 but every year I choose a “new Year’s” verse instead of making a resolution. You can check out my blog and read about it.

  15. I am so overwhelmed with blessings…it brings me such joy to see how the scriptures touch your hearts.

If you haven’t prayed about it or picked one out, that’s ok. You don’t have to. It’s just another way to draw closer to Him…and if you are like me, I take every road to Him that I can.

Cheryl – I love that idea…I headed over to check it out!

Mother – I think it is ok to have two special verses.

FreetoFly – can’t wait to see what you come up with.

Hope – I love Romans 8:28, as a matter of fact that was another special verse to us while our son was in the hospital.

Susan – You always have a good word!

Ivy – That was Bailey’s special verse when he graduated from 5th grade. The teachers read it aloung and claimed that as His special verse. (LOVE IT!)

  16. Wow!! What a respons you got here, that is a great post & I will toss this around in my head for a few days. I do have a couple of verses but so many of them also come to mind.. Wonderful food for thought!! Thanks

  17. Well, there are too many to list that have been life altering and foundational in my life, i.e. when I was a “baby Christian” for instance, immediately I became tempted in a way I had never been tempted before & it was really a terribly upsetting time in my life, I began to think fatalistically(oops-spelling) THEN I found the scriptures that said the truth our culture isn’t aware of…that out of every temptation God makes a way out for you to flee temptation…I had a CHOICE, where I thought I didn’t AND that was the MOST powerful life changing incident that ever happened in one specific instance, bc that scripture set me free IMMDEIATELY I knew that I could/would rise above & go the other way & boy did I!!! & no looking back!

Then the scriptures about marriage I remember my husband & I pillow talking about them (& giggling), & that began a change that continues to this day…God became the center of our marriage from that point on…

I could go on, but, I won’t put you to sleep! I will say that a about 3-4 years ago I was faced with a choice to forgive or cut and run, I chose Love Never Fails…and I haven’t regretted it! It remains to this day the single point that I act on when I am faced with a ‘don’t know what to do’ situation, it seems to be a way God leads me everytime, in other words, if I will seek the love way – He will show me a way to win by love!

I want to thank you, Mel for this question bc I have been blessed in the seeking while I answered it…everywhere I have gone today I have been inspired! Thank you! & thank you GOD!

  18. Hi Melissa…Returning your visit to my place! I don’t seem to have one verse that encapsulates my life…I think I’m such a mess that it takes the full counsel of God’s Word! Ha! One verse I have claimed many many times is Lam. 3:23, “The Lord will be good to those who wait on Him.” I need the reminder of Lam. 3 that His mercies are new every single morning and His faithfulness is great!

Oh yeah, LOVE the mom taxi graphic below!

Thanks for your visit and comment!

  19. Great responses!! Mine is Philippians 4:13 I can do all things through Christ Jesus who strengthens me.
Also when I went into ministry, John 8:36 For whom the Son sets free is free indeed. I am FREE!!!! yeah!!
    You are such an inspiration!!
    Thank you:)

  20. I love the subject of life verses. They are each so personal. Mine is…

Trust in the Lord with all thine heart, and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct thy paths. Proverbs 3:5-6

I also wanted to show you my website I’m an artist living in Texas and I do custom Christian paintings for the good of His kingdom. Drop me a line and let me know what you think.

    God Bless
