Soak up the Psalms – Part 2
WOW, I can hardly believe that it has been a week since we last sat down and soaked up these Psalms. I truly hope that you have taken some time to write some of these down. I know that keeping the Scriptures close and handy has helped me many times.
I have been reading along this week through the book of Psalms and have been blown away at the number of things I have underlined in the past and am underlining now. (Oh yeah, I am one of those “write in your Bible” chicks…I want to know what I have learned, how it impacted me, where I learned the lesson from, and what the date was…I probably should have been a librarian…ha!)
It is my honor and privilege to walk with you this Sunday morning through Book 2 of the Psalms which consists of Psalms 42-72. I have picked out some of my favorites and would love to hear from you if you have any personal favorites as well. If there is a particular reason one is your favorite I would love for you to share that (if you feel like it) as well.
So, here we go, let’s talk a walk and SOAK UP THE PSALMS today.
When you are sad, go toPsalm 42:5-6a
Why am I discouraged?
Why is my heart so sad?
I will put my hope in God!
I will praise him again—
my Savior and my God!
When you sit and wonder who God is, go to
Psalm 46:1
God is our refuge and strength,
always ready to help in times of trouble.
When life gets so “noisy” and you can’t hear from God, go to
Psalm 46:10a
Be still, and know that I am God!
When you want to know what God wants from us, go to
Psalm 50:14-15
Make thankfulness your sacrifice to God,
and keep the vows you made to the Most High.
Then call on me when you are in trouble,
and I will rescue you,
and you will give me glory.”
When you are overloaded with troubles and burdens, go to
Psalm 54:6b-7
I will praise your name, O Lord,
for it is good.
For you have rescued me from my troubles
and helped me to triumph over my enemies.
Psalm 55:22
Give your burdens to the Lord,
and he will take care of you.
He will not permit the godly to slip and fall.
When you feel like nobody in the world cares about you, just remember how important you are to God…
Psalm 56:8
You keep track of all my sorrows.
You have collected all my tears in your bottle.
You have recorded each one in your book.
When you are lost and cry out to God, go to
Psalm 63:1
O God, you are my God;
I earnestly search for you.
My soul thirsts for you;
my whole body longs for you
And last, but certainly not least, when your heart is so filled with love for your Heavenly Father and it feels like you are going to burst with joy, go to
Psalm 71:14-16
But I will keep on hoping for your help;
I will praise you more and more.
I will tell everyone about your righteousness.
All day long I will proclaim your saving power,
though I am not skilled with words.
I will praise your mighty deeds, O Sovereign Lord.
I will tell everyone that you alone are just.
That is the cry of my heart; that I would shout from the rooftops just how great and amazing our God is. There are no words that can capture His grace, goodness, and unfailing love, but I know that deep down in the core of who I am that “though I am not skilled with words” that God can and does use the most unlikely people to do things for Him each and every day, and that gives me HOPE.
Come back next week as we continue to Soak Up the Psalms and dive into Book Three (Psalms 73-89). Be on the lookout this week for some of your favorite Psalms in Book Three and also take a few minutes to write down some of the ones that touched your heart this week and put them in a journal you can keep handy.
Savoring His Word,
Oh, I love the Psalms! I have prayed over those verses from Ps. 42 many, many times…
One of my favorite devotional ideas is to read through the Psalms in a month. For example, today is the 30th (I think), so I would read Psalm 30, (then keep adding 30), 60, 90, 120, and 150. Tomorrow I would read Psalms 1, 31 (30 + 1), 61, 91, and so on…
Anyway, just FYI…
Great stuff here! May God richly bless you as you seek Him through the Psalms…
Inspiring post, dear Mel!
How are you? Hope all is well…
Blessings,
Melissa
That was really good, just what I needed to read this morning. 🙂 Thanks for taking ALL the time to post that. The Psalms are always good stuff to dig into, and I appreciate how you divided it up.
And I always need to be reminded of Psalm 46:10a.
To be still before God is so important!
Thanks!!
Sandy
I am a write in your Bible chick too. I also use the dreaded highlighter. I love the Psalms because of the way they are written, like poetry or music.
I’m a Bible writer too! I’ve got these down both in the Bible and on cards now, too!
