Soak up the Psalms – Part 4
Happy Sunday to you all!!! I can hardly believe that we have been studying the Book of Psalms the way we have for a month now…that’s crazy, but you know what, we really could spend another month going through and truly “SOAKING UP THE PSALMS”, don’t you think?
Today we are going to be studying the Psalms in Book 5, which are Psalms 107-150 (that’s a ton of great stuff, I would like to challenge you to check it out for youself in your quiet time this week). I am going to do my best to try and not make this post so incredibly big, but I just can’t hold back some of these…they are just too amazing.
This is probably my 7th or 8th time re-reading through all the Psalms (different seasons of my life and ministry have brought me back to the richness of ALL of them) and you know what??? I STILL learn something new and exciting every time I re-read through them.
It is my prayer that you have been richly blessed by the Psalms as we have taken these last four weeks to dig out (unearth, unpack, digest…whatever word fits you best) the nuggets of goodness that is buried all throughout the Psalms.
When you want to stand back in awe and amazement at how great and mighty He is, check out Psalm 111:1-3 and Psalm 145:1-3, because HE deserves ALL the praise.
Psalm 111:1-3 – 1[a] Praise the LORD. [b]
I will extol the LORD with all my heart
in the council of the upright and in the assembly.
2 Great are the works of the LORD;
they are pondered by all who delight in them.
3 Glorious and majestic are his deeds,
and his righteousness endures forever.
Psalm 145:1-3 – 1 I will exalt you, my God and King,
and praise your name forever and ever.
2 I will praise you every day;
yes, I will praise you forever.
3 Great is the Lord! He is most worthy of praise!
No one can measure his greatness.
When you want to remember that God is really listening and hearing your prayers, check out Psalm 116:1-2 and Psalm 138:3.
Psalm 116:1-2 – 1 I love the LORD, for he heard my voice;
he heard my cry for mercy.
2 Because he turned his ear to me,
I will call on him as long as I live.
Psalm 138:3 – 3 As soon as I pray, you answer me;
you encourage me by giving me strength.
When you want to know how much God loves you, check out Psalm 117:2.
Psalm 117:2 – 2 For great is his love toward us,
and the faithfulness of the LORD endures forever.
Praise the LORD. [a]
Here are some of my favorite memory verses from the Psalms Book 5, I remember them from the Pledge to the Christian Flag, the Pledge to the Bible (all those years of going to chapel with the kids really made a difference for ME as much as it did them!), I am sure that you know these too…
Psalm 115:1 – 1 Not to us, O LORD, not to us
but to your name be the glory,
because of your love and faithfulness.
Psalm 118:5-6 – 5 In my anguish I cried to the LORD,
and he answered by setting me free.
6 The LORD is with me; I will not be afraid.
What can man do to me?
Psalm 118:14 – 14 The LORD is my strength and my song;
he has become my salvation.
Psalm 118:24 – 24 This is the day the LORD has made;
let us rejoice and be glad in it.
Psalm 119:11 – 11 I have hidden your word in my heart
that I might not sin against you.
Psalm 119:105 – 105 Your word is a lamp to my feet
and a light for my path.
When you don’t have a clue about what to do next and you are earnestly seeking an answer from him check out Psalm 119:33-35.
Psalm 119:33-35 – 33 Teach me, O LORD, to follow your decrees;
then I will keep them to the end.
34 Give me understanding, and I will keep your law
and obey it with all my heart.
35 Direct me in the path of your commands,
for there I find delight.
When your kids are making you doubt your sanity (come on, you know it happens at times), check out Psalm 127:3 and remember what it says…
Psalm 127:3 – 3 Children are a gift from the Lord;
they are a reward from him.
When you begin to doubt whether or not you should be hopeful, go to Psalm 130:5.
Psalm 130:5 – 5 I am counting on the Lord;
yes, I am counting on him.
I have put my hope in his word.
As the mom of two very active boys, one pre-teen, and one in high school this next verse is very precious and important to me.
Psalm 133:1 – 1 How wonderful and pleasant it is
when brothers live together in harmony!
For every one who has ever doubted who they are in Him and if they are important to God, well, nothing says it better than Psalm 139. Yep, the WHOLE thing. I will be writing a future devotional to go through, line by line, this verse. So, if you want to read it click here to read the whole verse.
If you wonder what else you can praise Him for, check out the ’what’ and ‘how’ in Psalm 150, I think you’ll like it, especially those of you who are musically gifted (which is not me…I’d like to think it is, but according to my husband, well, that’s not so much).
Psalm 150 – 1 Praise the Lord!
Praise God in his sanctuary;
praise him in his mighty heaven!
2 Praise him for his mighty works;
praise his unequaled greatness!
3 Praise him with a blast of the ram’s horn;
praise him with the lyre and harp!
4 Praise him with the tambourine and dancing;
praise him with strings and flutes!
5 Praise him with a clash of cymbals;
praise him with loud clanging cymbals.
6 Let everything that breathes sing praises to the Lord!
Praise the Lord!
Take some time today to re-read through these Psalms and truly let them SOAK in a bit…there is nothing sweeter than learning God’s Word.
