God IS in the Details

This picture was on the last day we were in the hospital. We were waiting to hear back from the neurologist, waiting to find out when we could get out of dodge, and waiting…well…you get the point.

We’re home now and trying to settle into our new “normal” (whatever that might be). The meds have made Nick very sleepy, but we are also pretty sure that he is just plain old worn out from everything he’s been through these last couple of days. (I know the rest of us are too)

We’re not completely sure what the future holds, but thankfully we know the One who does and in Him we are finding great peace right now. I mentioned the other day that there were so many “God moments” throughout this whole ordeal and so just to show you that God IS in the details I wanted to share a few of them with you.

1) It was a Sunday morning, and since hubby is a Pastor and I work in ministry too, that means we both should have been at church that morning. I had been sick the day before (4th of July) and still had slight fever, body aches, & sore throat, so I decided that I should stay home on Sunday so I didn’t infect the entire church with my cooties. God was in the details.

2) Nick was supposed to be working at the grocery store on Sunday from 10am – 6pm. He woke up at 7am not feeling well (we later figured out that he probably had a seizure around that time and we saw him “after” when he was kind of out of it). I told him he should stay home and get some rest too. God is in the details.

3) Nick went to his room to sleep, I went to my room to sleep, then at about 8:30am I asked him to come to my room so I could “keep an eye” on him while I rested too. He called into work and told them he was sick & wouldn’t make it that day. God is in the details.

4) At 11am my cell phone rang, it was my youngest son (Bailey) asking me about snacks for the kids ministry. I was completely worn out & took a minute to shake my head clear to talk to Bailey about his question when at that moment I felt a thump on my head. It was Nick in full blown grand mal seizures. While I was on the phone with Bailey I told him to run & get his dad out of church. God is in the details.

5) I called hubby’s phone, which was not turned on silent yet (that never happens) and was able to tell him to come home immediately. God is in the details.

6) One of the paramedics that came to the house is one of our neighbors. We’ve never met him, but he said that he sees the kids out playing and Nick out running. God is in the details.

7) I called my mom & dad to let them know what was going on (they attend our church) and they came straight over to the hospital. My mom is having her 7th out of 8 chemo treatments this Friday (she can’t afford to get sick), and while she was at the Peds ER there was not a single other person there. God is in the details.

8) When they decided to transport us to the children’s hospital to be admitted and do more tests one of the transport paramedics was Nick’s respiratory therapists from the time Nick was in the PICU for 51 days back in 2005. He remembered us and instantly clicked with Nick. God is in the details.

9) One of our old PICU nurses was in “Charge” when we were being brought over to the children’s hospital and made sure that we were set up in one of the BEST rooms they had (it was a mini suite) so we would be comfortable. God is in the details.

10) When you get admitted to the hospital they always ask your religious affiliation (not sure why, they just do). The nurse that was taking our information asked me that and I mentioned that we are Christians and that Nick’s dad is a Pastor and she said, “Well, Amen, we’ll just have to pray that boy healthy”. (She is a believer too) God is in the details.

11) There are more…but the BIGGEST sign for us that God IS in the details was this…we have not had health insurance for 8 long months. If you have kids then you know just how stressful that is, but when you have a kid that has a pre-existing condition (Nick has diabetes) then it is even more nerve wrecking. We JUST got our health insurance, effective July 1st, a mere 4 days before Nick would have a seizure.

That, my friends, is how I know, that God IS in the details.

This is my life work: helping people understand and respond to this Message. It came as a sheer gift to me, a real surprise, God handling all the details. When it came to presenting the Message to people who had no background in God’s way, I was the least qualified of any of the available Christians. God saw to it that I was equipped, but you can be sure that it had nothing to do with my natural abilities. ~ Ephesians 3:7 TM

So here we are…taking it one day at a time.

  1. WOW! This is amazing! Amazing proof of God at work in your life! REALLY AWESOME post! So points out the need to stay focused on God! VERY POWERFUL STUFF!

  2. Mel, I can so relate. God’s hand moved in similar ways when my mom was hospitalized for several months. God is so into the details. He loves us more than our human minds can even comprehend.

  3. Melissa, you know Nick was born for such a time as this to show the world that God is in control and to use you to be His instrument to convey this truth. You have been such an inspiration to so many people because you have allowed God to use you even when you initially had no idea that He could use someone like you! I thank God that He introduced me to you, Matt and the boys. Keep strong and encouraged so that I, too, can keep strong and encouraged through your inspiration.

    Your Sister in Christ!

  4. Wow! You made me tear up! It is just so awesome to see the loving hand of God in the midst of chaos and even more I am touched by you being able to see it. Sometimes we are so caught up in the “why me’s?” that we miss God’s love in it. Thank you for touching my heart this morning with your story and God’s faithfulness.

  5. Mel, since none of this was a surprise to our God, of COURSE He had it all planned out to the tiniest of details! Praising Him and laughing out loud this morning with Joy over the way He loves to show off to make sure that we get it and point it out to everyone around us!

  6. God is just so awesome! It’s in those details that He shows us time and time again that He sees every minute thing we have going on. It just boggles my mind everytime – even though it shouldn’t.

Praying for you and your family!

  7. Mel,

I am new to your blog found you for Holly’s.

I am praising God right along with you (with tears in my eyes) over how awesome our God is. He does seem to be very detail minded. One of my favorite verses is from Deut 1:31 And in the wilderness where you saw how the LORD your God carried you, as a man carries his son, in all the way that you went until you came to this place. I am so glad that His arms never tire of carrying us through this journey called life.

Praying for you and your family, and doing the happy dance.

  8. This is a great post- I love that you’re using this trial to still give God the glory!!
I have epilepsy and I still remember how tired I was when I first started the meds- not to mention the seizures make you tired-it takes awhile but you do get used to it and the energy returns.

  9. It’s a wonderful thing to see how God is working. Often we can see it more clearly when things like this happen. Heather had a seizure in a store a few years ago. Like you, we were able to point at so many things that were just right at the time, showing us that God really is in the details!

  10. I haven’t been following blogs much lately, but this post jumped out at me. My son has epilepsy & we have had to deal with seizures (petite to grand mal) for the past 4yrs.

Thank you for sharing the details of how God was in each part of your situation. Just this week God unexpectedly spoke into my heart & reminded me that He was with me during some difficult times several years ago. It was a time of healing from that pain. Thank you for sharing these “God moments” as they have reinforced what God was speaking to me about this week.

  11. What a beautiful testimony of our awesome God!! Thanks for sharing Melissa! That’s exactly why He is in the details, so we can share His glory!! Amen Sister!

  12. Praise the Lord for His plan! I thank Him for you REALIZING that He was with you the entire time, as He always is! Love ya, hon, and am continuing to keep your family in my prayers!

  13. This is so amazing Melissa! Here I thought we were praying you through the health situation with your mom and grandmother and now this. When it rains, it pours!

I love how you were able to see how faithful our Lord really is. He is in the details! How many times do we question or wonder why but He alone knows what will happen. And we need to walk by faith.

Thank you for sharing what you’re learning as you go through this time of challenges. I love that He gives you peace in the uncertainty because you make the choice to keep your eyes on Jesus. You are going to touch some many others through this. Unbelievers look to see how Christians handle crisis and girl, I think you’re doing amazingly well considering.

I’m sending you a hug today and I’m continuing to pray. I need to update my list for you though. Love you.

  14. yes, He is! and i am so glad that He kept you and your family close and protected during this time! prayers for recovery and health!!!

  15. Hi sweet Mel! I haven’t been by in awhile so I was shocked to learn what has been going on in Mel’s World. Bless your heart.

God TRULY is present in the details. I know this is something that has always been true, but I learned it first hand during my time with cancer, radiation, my broken legs, etc. I think at times like this, you see it even clearer.

I promise I will be praying for Nick and for your entire family.

    How is your Mom doing?

Take care of YOU girlfriend. That’s so important so you can be there for the others.

  16. Amen to that! God works in so many ways that we don’t always see. Praise Him for His provision and for working out the details!
